What is IPL?

IPL photofacials are non-invasive treatments that harness broad band light to rejuvenate the skin, tackling concerns like sun damage, age spots, and hyperpigmentation. By targeting specific skin cells, IPL improves skin tone, texture, and overall appearance, revealing a brighter, more even complexion.

Is IPL  a laser?

IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, making it effective for general photodamage, redness, and discoloration. For this reason, we sometimes refer to it as the "Jack of all trades, master of none". Lasers, with their single, focused wavelength, are more targeted and suited for specific concerns like veins or resurfacing. While IPL can address multiple issues, lasers provide more precise treatment for particular targets. Combining IPL with lasers can enhance overall results, addressing both broad and specific skin concerns.

Is IPL  safe on all skin types?

IPL is generally safest for lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick 1-4). Due to its broad-spectrum light, IPL can struggle to differentiate between pigmentation and skin tone, potentially causing burns, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation in darker skin types. It's also contraindicated for tanned skin or patients with excessive sun exposure.

For individuals with darker skin types seeking to address discoloration, alternative options like prescription topicals or specific lasers designed for darker skin tones may be more suitable.

Photofacial FAQ's

How much does an IPL cost?

A single facial treatment costs $250 a series of 3 is $600.

Can other areas of the body be treated?

Any area of the body that demonstrates sun damage is perfect for IPL. More common areas include decolletage (chest), shoulders, arms, back, and legs.

How many treatments do I need?

While improvement can be seen after 1 treatment, the best results come after a series of 3, each one month apart. Most people will strat with a series and then repeat 1 treatment ever fall/winter to undo any new sun damage.

What should I do to prepare for my IPL?

Stop retinol 3 days prior and avoid sun exposure. Tell your therapist if you are taking any medications that make you sensitive in the sun or if you are prone to cold sores or seizures.

What is my aftercare?

After your treatment expect some degree of redness for 24-48 hours and your brown sports will initially appear darker. We refer to this as bronzing or peppering and it is a good indication of how much sun damage is being lifted out of the skin. We recommend SkinMedica Procedure 360 Kit for the next 5 days after your treatment.  It includes a facial cleanser, a repair complex full of healing exosomes, ultra hydrating TNS ceramide moisturizer, restorative ointment and zinc based sunscreen. Your therapist will tell you when to resume your daily products, usually around 5-7 days.

Is the treatment painful?

IPL is very tolerable. Even wearing protective goggles, you will see flashes of light. Each pulse has a subtle snap feeling and warm like briefly touching something hot. Your face may feel warm like a sunburn for a few hours.

Is IPL good for hair removal?

IPL can permanently remove some thick dark hairs so we avoid the eyebrows and beard areas (men), although it is nowhere as effective as a laser hair removal device. This can be good news for women with an occasional chin hair or when treating places like the lower legs. Bonus!
