What is Kybella®?

KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the treatment area under the chin to improve your profile.

Where is Kybella® injected?

While FDA-approved for treating submental fat (under the chin), Kybella® can also be used off-label to address small pockets of fat in other areas.  Injected into the Buccal Fat  (jowls) it can help reduce the appearance of sagging fat in the lower face.  For larger areas, alternative treatments like CoolSculpti® may be more suitable due to their safety profile and tolerability. Kybella's effectiveness is best leveraged for smaller, more targeted fat reduction.

How does Kybella® work?

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

Fat Cells vs Skin Cells

Fat cells and skin cells respond differently to weight fluctuations:

Fat Cells After age 25, the number of fat cells we have remains relatively constant unless altered by surgery or treatments like Kybella®.

Fat cells can expand and shrink like balloons, storing and releasing triglycerides as needed.

Skin Cells Skin cells multiply to accommodate weight gain, increasing in number.

Unlike fat cells, skin cells don't shrink when we lose weight; instead, the excess skin can sag, much like ill-fitting clothing.

With subtle weight loss, skin may be tightened with lasers and other devices.  With excessive weight loss, surgical intervention is often necessary.

Fat Dissolving Injections FAQ's

How many treatments will I need?

The number of Kybella® treatments required depends on the amount of fat present and individual response to the treatment. Typically, a full treatment is administered initially, and progress is reassessed using before-and-after imaging. If additional treatment is needed, a second round may be performed, often with a smaller amount of product. This approach allows for a tailored treatment plan to achieve optimal results.

Do the injections hurt?

When Kybella® was first introduced, the treatment involved multiple injection points marked on the treatment area, with one shot per marked spot. However, off-label use of a cannula – a blunt-tipped needle – has become a popular alternative. This technique allows for smoother delivery of the product under the skin with fewer entry points, substantially reducing discomfort and bruising.  Since the Deoxycholic Acid dissolves fat, a mild to moderate burning can be felt for about 15-20 minutes after treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Bruising, tenderness and swelling are by far the most commonly seen side effects. To minimize bruising, avoid alcohol 2 days before and stop any unnecessary blood thinners like Vit E, St John's wart, Omega 3, aspirin and anti-inflammatories.  When injecting Kybella® with cannula, these expected reactions are greatly reduced.

When will I see results?

After Kybella® treatment, initial swelling and bruising typically subside within about a week. As the treatment works to liquify the targeted fat cells, the body takes some time to fully process and eliminate them. The final results are usually visible within 4-8 weeks, once the body has fully cleared the treated fat cells.

What does Kybella® cost?

The initial treatment costs $1600.

Does Kybella® really work?

Kybella® is most effective for patients with noticeable submental fat. However, not all patients complaining of a "turkey neck" are ideal candidates. Often, the issue is excess skin due to volume loss or gravity rather than fat. In such cases, Kybella® may not be the best solution. Some patients may have had limited success with Kybella® elsewhere due to a lack of sufficient submental fat, suggesting that an alternative treatment might have been more suitable. A thorough evaluation by a qualified injector is crucial to determine the best course of treatment.
