What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is the original FDA-approved poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA-SCA) collagen stimulator that can improve skin glow, tightness, and jawline contour for up to 2 years. Initially brought onto the US market for wrinkles in 2004.

How does Sculptra® work?

Sculptra® is injected under the skin to help restore it's inner structure. As the particles are absorbed, they help stimulate and restore collagen production.  Collagen strands begin to rebuild gradually, helping to restore skin structure and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and folds

Where is Sculptra® injected?

Sculptra® is commonly used to restore subtle volume in the cheek and temple areas, providing a natural-looking enhancement. Beyond its traditional use, Sculptra® can be employed off-label to stimulate collagen production in various areas of the body. This versatility has led to its use in addressing volume loss and skin laxity in areas such as:

Buttocks: lift and enhance the shape of the buttocks.

Knees and elbows: Loss of fat in these areas can contribute to an aged appearance

Abdomen: Crepey, thinning skin

Upper inner arms: enhances skin texture and reduce the appearance of sagging

Who are ideal candidates for Sculptra® ?

Sculptra's collagen-stimulating properties can benefit individuals experiencing facial aging. It's particularly well-suited for those very thin patients with little facial fat that can benefit from Sculptra's ability to restore volume and enhance facial contours where fillers can be a little more challenging.

Important Considerations
However, patients with autoimmune diseases should exercise caution when considering Sculptra®. Due to their altered immune response, they may be more prone to side effects or less desirable outcomes. If you have an autoimmune or inflammatory condition, it's crucial to consult with an experienced injector to determine if Sculptra® is a suitable treatment option for you.

How much do I need?

A standard Sculptra® treatment typically involves 2 vials, with a general guideline of 1 vial per decade of life. For example, a 60-year-old might require 6 vials.

Since Sculptra® works by stimulating the body's natural collagen production, individual results can vary significantly. Due to this unpredictability, we recommend starting with 2 vials and reassessing progress 2-3 months later, using before-and-after imaging. If you're satisfied with the initial results, additional treatments can be planned.

For comprehensive facial rejuvenation, we often suggest 2 vials per year, complemented by targeted treatments with hyaluronic fillers to address specific areas of concern.

Biostimulator FAQ's

How many treatments will I need?

Since Sculptra's results rely on how well your immune system reacts to the product, we recommend starting with one treatment and re-evaluate with before and after imaging at three months. Those with very favorable responses often will perform 1-2 more rounds a month apart. At minimum, it is recommended to invest at least one treatment per year.

When will I see results?

Sculptra's effects are gradual and can take several weeks or months to become fully apparent with sustained results for up to 2 years. Rarely can it take longer than this and even more rare that there may be little to no response.

Do the injections hurt?

We use both small needles and cannulas to inject Sculptra® maximizing our results while minimizing the number of needle pokes.  We also make the procedure more comfortable by using ice prior to injection, a distracting skin vibrator, a little of your favorite music playing to keep your mind occupied. Most importantly, we do not rush our injections and are very delicate in handling your face, this makes the biggest difference.

Are there any side effects?

Bruising, tenderness and swelling are by far the most commonly seen side effects. To minimize bruising, avoid alcohol 2 days before and stop any unnecessary blood thinners like Vit E, St John's wart, Omega 3, aspirin and anti-inflammatories.  Initial lumps and bumps can also be common right after treatment and typically resolve without an issue.  There is evidence of delayed nodules that can appear weeks to months after treatment and are often related to an individual's immune system. This is why we do not recommend any types of filler injections a month before or after illness, infections, steroid or antibiotic use, medical or dental procedures (even a simple cleaning) or immunizations. Nodules are not usually dangerous and are easily treated, some can resolve on their own in a day or two.

Is Sculptra® better then filler?

Because they do two different things, it's hard to say that one is better than the other. Both are invaluable tools in the aging process. Sculptra® restores over all volume loss when filler is better for more detailed and location specific treatment. Rather than comparing Sculptra® and fillers, it's more accurate to consider them as complementary treatments. By combining these options, we can create personalized treatment plans that address a range of concerns.
