What is Botox® Cosmetic?
In 2002, Botox® was the first FDA approved neurotoxin and currently is the only one FDA approved for FOUR cosmetic indications:
* Frown Lines (11's between the eyes)
* Forehead Lines
* Crow's Feet
* Vertical Neck Bands
There are also 10 therapeutic indications, and over 570 peer reviewed scientific articles making it one of the most studied drugs in existence.
How does Botox® work?
The brain sends a signal to the muscle telling it to contract, causing bunching of the overlying skin forming a wrinkle. Botox® is injected into that muscle to temporarily interrupt that communication, preventing the muscle contraction and thereby preventing the wrinkle formation. Effects can be seen within 2-3 days but may take a full 2-3 weeks to be fully active. Results can last 3-4 months.
Where is Botox® injected?
Botox® can be injected on-label between the brows, along the forehead, in the crow's feet and along the neck bands. Off-label it can also be safely injected in the following areas:
NOSE- to lift the tip, bunny lines or flaring nostrils
Lips - for a lip flip, gummy smile and to lift the corners of the mouth
Chin - to reduce frown lines and dimpling
Massters - to reduce teeth grinding and soften a square jawline
Trap and Calf Muscles - to slim
Under Arms, Palms and Soles - to minimize sweating
Types of Wrinkles?
Dynamic Wrinkles (top photo) are seen with movement, when the underlying muscle contracts. Botox® work great on these types of wrinkles
Static Wrinkles are present at rest (bottom photo). These wrinkles have been earned and ingrained after many years of the muscle moving underneath the skin. Just like a crease in your favorite leather shoe they are more permanent. These line will NOT go away with just one treatment. But repetitive treatments every 3-4 months will stop the movement causing the crease and they will fade.
Neurotoxin FAQ's
Why Botox® and not the other neurotoxins?
Great question! Currently there are 5 other neurotoxins on the US market and more are coming. Honestly, the biggest difference is who is manufacturing it. All 6 of these are "brand names" of botulinumtoxinA . In the hands of a skilled injector it really does not matter which of these brands you choose, you still get great long lasting results. There is a lot of marketing and misinformation even amongst injectors that would make one believe one brand is superior to the others.
Why choose Botox ® then?
I choose Botox® for my clients due to its unparalleled track record of safety and efficacy. With the most FDA-approved indications and extensive research backing its use, Botox ® stands out from other similar products. As a leader in innovation, Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox®, invests heavily in research and development, ensuring a top-notch product. Additionally, their comprehensive support for practices like mine enables us to provide exceptional care and support to our clients. This commitment to excellence, combined with its long history of safe use, gives me confidence in recommending Botox® to my clients.
Do the injections hurt?
We use a 32g needle to inject Botox®, it is teeny tiny, about the thickness of a hair strand. Most people feel just a small poke or sting, To make the procedure more comfortable we use ice prior to injection and a special injection technique.
Are there any side effects?
Anytime a needle is poked into the skin there is always a chance of bruising, although not commonly seen. To minimize bruising, avoid alcohol 2 days before and stop any unnecessary blood thinners like Vit E, St John's wart, Omega 3, aspirin and anti-inflammatories. Tenderness and a very small bump may be seen for a few hours after injection. If the Botox® can accidentally get into a muscle we did not intend and a side effect like a dropped eyebrow or eyelid is possible even in the most skilled injector's hands.
What does Botox® cost?
Unlike some clinics and medspas that charge by the unit, our approach is more personalized – we charge per treatment area. This allows us to tailor your Botox® treatment to your unique needs, ensuring you get the full 3-4 month benefit. To guarantee optimal results, we offer a complimentary follow-up appointment two weeks after your initial treatment, where we can fine-tune our dosage and placement as needed. The cost of Botox at our practice ranges from $150 to $400 per area, depending on the size of the treatment zone.

How long does Botox® take to work?
Initial results from Botox® treatment are typically visible within 2-3 days, as the targeted muscle weakens and expressions become less pronounced. Optimal results are usually achieved within 2 weeks, but may vary from person to person and even between treatments for the same individual. If you notice excessive movement after 2 weeks, a complimentary 'tweakment' session is available to adjust the dosage and achieve the desired effect.
Why would I need a touch up?
We like to call them Tweakments! But here are just a few of the reasons you might need to come back in 2-3 weeks to recheck your results.
* Botox® is a prescription drug, it's never perfect 100% off the time
* New patients - we are just getting to know your unique face and personalized formula
* Our faces change with time, weight changes, hormonal shifts, etc
* Your immune system can have a big impact on how your muscle reacts to the drug. If you are sick, on antibiotics, steroids (just to name a few) your body may not fully respond
* Placement - We want to inject into a muscle that is causing a negative facial expression, not those creating positive expressions like a smile. These muscles overlap a lot and sometimes less than a millimeter thick. So we need to be very careful in certain places.
*Muscle strength - Just like a bodybuilder in the gym, bigger and stronger muscles can lift higher weights. Facial muscles, although much smaller, can also be stronger on one side versus the other. Since you tend to use a certain muscle more than another, that muscle may need more injected into it and may seem to wear off faster,
How long does Botox® last?
Botox® effects typically last 3-4 months, after which your body reestablishes muscle-nerve connection. Just like any muscle, repeated use strengthens it, leading to deeper lines at rest.
Regular maintenance treatments every 3-4 months can help:
* Fade existing lines at rest
* Prevent new lines from forming, especially for younger individuals
Consistency is key to optimal results and a smoother appearance.

Does dosing matter?
Simply put, DOSE = DURATION.
Patients often request lower unit doses to reduce costs, but this approach can compromise the duration of the treatment's effects. Research has shown that decreased doses directly correlate with shorter-lasting results.
Concerns about high doses causing side effects like brow drooping are understandable, but it's essential to note that:
* Injection location, not dose amount, is the primary factor in such complications.
* Botox® Therapeutic, FDA-approved for treating muscle spasticity in children with cerebral palsy, safely administers doses up to 20 times higher than those used for wrinkle treatment.
Striking the right balance between dose and efficacy is crucial. Our experienced professionals will work with you to determine the optimal dose for your individual needs, ensuring the best possible results while minimizing the risk of adverse effects.
Does Neurotoxin immunity exist?
Current studies show that less than 1/2 of a 1/2 percent of the population can be immune to neurotoxin, it's incredibly rare. That's great news! Often the perception that the treatment is not working can be explained by dose and location of the injection. The bad news is that since all the neurotoxins on the US market share the same mechanism, immunity to one typically means immunity to all based on our current scientific knowledge.
Temporary neurotoxin immunity, also known as neutralizing antibody formation, is a rare condition where the body's immune system develops antibodies against the neurotoxin. Clinically it will seem as if the treatment or touch up is not taking full effect. This can happen when injections are performed too often. It is recommended to wait at least 90 days between treatments, therefore, if you are receiving treatment for migraines you will want to treat your wrinkles around the same time. Temporary immunity will resolve by taking a break for a few months.
