What is Juvéderm®?

JUVÉDERM® is the #1 chosen dermal filler collection in the US* with 6 unique fillers designed for 10 specific areas of the face. The main ingredient in the JUVÉDERM® Collection of Fillers is a modified form of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a sugar naturally produced by the body that retains moisture in the skin.  They are specifically designed for different areas of the face, so your customized treatment plan is tailored to your unique anatomy and goals.

How does Juvéderm® work?

During your treatment, your injector will use a needle or cannula to add subtle volume for smooth, natural-looking results. The product contains lidocaine so it will provide relief while being injected, making the treatment virtually painless. Based on product selection and injection location, the filler will slowly start to integrate with your tissue for a smooth, soft, undetectable look in a few weeks. At the time of injection, it is normal that the filler feels firm, much like a cold gummy bear. As it integrates into your tissue it turns into more of a warm gummy bear and most people cannot detect the filler.  Over time, your body's own natural enzymes will slowly breakdown and eliminate the filler.

Where is Juvéderm® injected?

With age and weight loss we lose volume underneath our skin, in essence we deflate. The skin is then left to hang, much like loose clothing. When properly injected by an experienced provider, HA fillers, like Juvéderm® can naturally replace that lost volume and return the skin into it's more youthful position.

FIller can be injected into various layers of the skin (we refer to this as depth) depending the desired results and the location on the face.   But filler is not only injected into the face! Beautiful results can be obtained in the earlobes, neck and decolletage, hands and virtually anyplace on the body.

Do you just fill the line?

In the early days of aesthetic treatments, we would place filler directly in the lines. However, this often lead to unnatural appearances and abnormal movements.  We now understand the cause of these lines and treat the problem not the symptom.  The most common example of this is in the laugh line. That line is caused by loss of volume deep in the front of the cheek.  The cheek will deflate and sag and adhesions in the skin will create the crease. See for yourself when you pull your cheek back a little towards your ear, the line greatly improves.

How much do I need?

Many patients fear fillers, worrying they'll look unnatural or overdone. This fear often stems from seeing poor technique examples. However, when done correctly by a trained injector, fillers should create a subtle, refreshed look – not a noticeable, overfilled appearance. To put things into perspective, 2 level teaspoons (10 syringes) may seem like a lot, but it's actually a generous amount to distribute across the face. In fact, it takes just over half of this amount to achieve a fully balanced look.

Great results depend on :
* a licensed, skilled injector
* a thorough full face assessment
* correct product selection
* appropriate location and depth of injection
* flawless technique

Filler FAQ's

What's the difference between Juvéderm® and the others?

While there are a few different types of fillers in the US market, by far the most common used are the hyaluronic acids. Primarily, they are reversible and this makes a huge difference if you are not happy with your results or have an adverse reaction and we need to remove the product.

Juvéderm® specifically currently has 6 different types of fillers in their collection. While they all look the same in the syringe, they have very different properties. Some are soft and less firm than others, like a foam ball versus a squishy ball to a rubber ball.  They also spread differently, like choosing what to put on your toast.  Some are like honey, others like peanut butter and others more like room temperature butter. These properties allow your injector to choose the best tool for the job.

Why choose Juvéderm® then?

I choose Juvéderm® for my clients due to its exceptional quality and versatility, backed by Allergan's commitment to innovation and research. What sets Juvéderm® apart is its range of products, each specifically designed to address unique facial areas and concerns associated with aging. From restoring volume and hydration to smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, Juvéderm's ® diverse portfolio allows for tailored treatments that precisely meet individual needs.  Juvederm's precision engineering ensures natural-looking results that exceed client expectations. Here are their FDA approvals:

Voluma - Cheek, chin and temple augmentation to correct age-related volume loss

Volux - Treatment of moderate to severe loss of jawline definition

Vollure - Correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds

Volbella - Lip augmentation ; and correction of perioral lines and wrinkles

Ultra - Lip augmentation and correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds

Ultra Plus - Correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds

Do the injections hurt?

We use both small needles and cannulas to inject Juvéderm®. Needles are better for precision and cannulas allow for better placement with less needle pokes and bruising. Juvéderm® contains Lidocaine, so the area will become numb even after the first injection. We also make the procedure more comfortable by using ice prior to injection, a distracting skin vibrator, a little of your favorite music playing to keep your mind occupied. Most importantly, we do not rush our injections and are very delicate in handling your face, this makes the biggest difference.

Are there any side effects?

Bruising, tenderness and swelling are by far the most commonly seen side effects. To minimize bruising, avoid alcohol 2 days before and stop any unnecessary blood thinners like Vit E, St John's wart, Omega 3, aspirin and anti-inflammatories.  Initial lumps and bumps can also be common right after treatment and typically resolve without an issue.  There is evidence of delayed nodules that can appear weeks to months after treatment and are often related to an individual's immune system. This is why we do not recommend any types of filler injections a month before or after illness, infections, steroid or antibiotic use, medical or dental procedures (even a simple cleaning) or immunizations. Nodules are not usually dangerous and are easily treated, some can resolve on their own in a day or two.

Prices vary depending on the treatment plan, but you can expect to pay $800 for lip filler or $3,999 for full facial balancing, which is often achieved in a single treatment for most patients. When will I see the results of my treatment?

With hyaluronic acid fillers, you can expect to see results immediately after treatment, as the filler is essentially implanted beneath the tissue. However, it's common to experience some initial swelling and numbness due to the lidocaine, which can make you feel like your results are still developing. Don't worry – this is temporary! Most people find that their results look very natural, and others may not even notice you've had any work done. If you're loving your results right away, just wait – they'll only get better with time. As the filler settles and the swelling subsides, your results will continue to refine and improve over the next week, and will often reach their optimal appearance 2-3 months after treatment.

Why would I need to come back in a month?

By this point, your results have likely reached their full potential. We love sharing before-and-after photos with our patients, as they often reveal subtly dramatic and dramatically subtle transformations that might not be immediately noticeable. Using our advanced 3D Vectra camera, we can showcase your results in stunning detail, with side-by-side comparisons and even transitioning views that highlight the nuances of your transformation. This technology also helps us fine-tune your results, allowing us to make any necessary adjustments – such as refining the shape of your lips – to ensure you're completely thrilled with your outcome.  This is our gift to you!  Be reassured, your photos will not be displayed in-office or on-line with your explicit consent.

How long does Juvéderm® last?

A common question we get asked is about the longevity of Juvéderm® fillers. When we say it lasts up to 2 years, that's because that's the duration of the FDA trial, during which patients who received full correction were still satisfied with their results. We're not allowed to claim it lasts any longer, as it wasn't studied beyond that point. However, with advances in imaging technologies like ultrasound and MRI, we can actually track the filler's presence and placement under the skin for many years after injection. Additionally, facial plastic surgeons often report finding remnants of the product during facelifts performed years later, which gives us insight into its long-term durability.

Consistency is key to optimal results and a smoother appearance.
